South Sudan's Independence
How the Comprehensive Peace Agreement led to the world's newest country — and why peace remained elusive.
The Road to Independence
The 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) ended the Second Sudanese Civil War and guaranteed southern Sudan a referendum on independence after a six-year interim period. The agreement was brokered with heavy international involvement, particularly from the United States, and was considered one of Africa's most significant peace deals.
In January 2011, 98.83% of southern Sudanese voted for independence. On July 9, 2011, the Republic of South Sudan became the world's newest nation and the 193rd UN member state. The international community celebrated — but the celebration was premature.
