South China Sea Disputes

Overlapping claims, artificial islands, and the most contested waters in the world.

Competing Claims

The South China Sea is claimed in overlapping portions by China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan. China's 'nine-dash line' claim encompasses roughly 90% of the South China Sea, overlapping with virtually every other claimant's EEZ. The legal basis for this claim is vague — China cites 'historic rights' dating back centuries but has never specified the precise nature of its claim under UNCLOS.

The 2016 arbitral tribunal ruling in Philippines v. China found that China's nine-dash line claim had no legal basis under UNCLOS and that China had violated the Philippines' sovereign rights in its EEZ. China rejected the ruling as 'null and void,' creating a fundamental challenge to the rules-based maritime order.
