Social Movements Online
How social media has enabled and shaped movements from the Arab Spring to #BlackLivesMatter — and the limits of digital activism.
From Tahrir Square to #BlackLivesMatter
The Arab Spring (2010-2012) was the first major test of social media as a tool for political revolution. Protesters in Tunisia, Egypt, and elsewhere used Facebook and Twitter to coordinate demonstrations, share real-time footage, and attract international attention. The speed with which protests spread across the region was unprecedented.
#BlackLivesMatter, founded in 2013 after the acquittal of Trayvon Martin's killer, became a global movement through social media. The hashtag was used over 47 million times on Twitter in the weeks following George Floyd's killing in May 2020. Social media allowed decentralized organizing — anyone could start a local protest, share resources, and document police conduct in real time.
