Return to Power: Deng's Rise After Mao
How Deng outmaneuvered Hua Guofeng and the remnants of Maoist leadership to become China's paramount leader by 1978.
Hua Guofeng and the Succession Crisis
Mao's chosen successor was Hua Guofeng, a relatively obscure official whose main credential was Mao's alleged instruction: 'With you in charge, I am at ease.' Hua moved quickly to arrest the Gang of Four in October 1976, winning broad support. But his insistence on the 'Two Whatevers' — whatever Mao said was correct, whatever Mao decided must be upheld — left him ideologically trapped.
Deng, rehabilitated in July 1977, challenged the Two Whatevers with a different slogan: 'Seek truth from facts.' This seemingly abstract philosophical debate was actually a power struggle. If Mao could be wrong, then Mao's chosen successor could be replaced — and Mao's policies could be reversed.
