Research Methodology for PF Topics

PF topics change monthly. Build a systematic research process that lets you prepare a competitive case in days, not weeks.

The First 48 Hours After Topic Release

When a new PF topic drops, the clock starts. Teams that have a systematic research process gain an enormous advantage over those who start by aimlessly Googling. The first 48 hours should follow a structured sequence.

Start with background reading — not evidence cutting. Read two or three overview articles from sources like the Council on Foreign Relations, Brookings, or the Congressional Research Service to understand the policy landscape. What are the major stakeholders? What has already been tried? What are the contested empirical questions? You cannot find good evidence if you do not understand the terrain.

Next, map the argument space. Write down every argument you can think of for both sides — even bad ones. Group them into categories: economic arguments, security arguments, humanitarian arguments, precedent arguments. This map tells you where to focus your research. If there are five economic arguments on Pro and only one on Con, the economic dimension is probably Pro-leaning, and Con needs to either find a strong economic response or shift the debate to a different dimension.
