Renaissance Florence

The volatile world that shaped Machiavelli — the Medici, republican politics, and the Italian Wars that destroyed the old order.

The Crucible of Florence

Niccolo Machiavelli was born in 1469 in Florence, one of the most dynamic and dangerous cities in Europe. Florence was nominally a republic but had been dominated by the Medici banking family since the 1430s. The Medici ruled through patronage, manipulation, and the appearance of republican government — technically they held no formal title, but their wealth and networks controlled the city.

In 1494, the Medici were overthrown and a radical theocratic government under the Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola took power. Savonarola's puritanical regime burned books and art in the 'Bonfire of the Vanities' before his own execution in 1498. A genuine republic was then established, and in 1498, the 29-year-old Machiavelli was appointed as second chancellor — a senior diplomatic and administrative role that gave him firsthand experience of power, war, and statecraft.
