Religious and Cult Propaganda
How religious movements and cults use propaganda techniques to recruit, retain, and control members.
The Propaganda of Belonging
Religious and cult propaganda exploits one of humanity's deepest needs: belonging. Unlike political propaganda, which primarily seeks to change beliefs, cult propaganda seeks to change identity — to make the group the center of a person's self-concept so thoroughly that leaving becomes psychologically unthinkable.
Recruitment typically begins with 'love bombing' — overwhelming a potential recruit with attention, warmth, and acceptance. This is testimonial propaganda at its most personal. The recruit hears stories of transformation, sees happy community members, and is told they have been specially chosen. Only after emotional commitment deepens does the group gradually introduce more demanding beliefs and behaviors.
