Impromptu Speaking
How to think on your feet during unmoderated caucuses, unexpected questions, and sudden moderated caucus topics.
The PREP Framework for Impromptu Responses
When a topic catches you off guard — a surprise moderated caucus, a pointed question, or a new sub-topic — use PREP:
- Point: State your position in one sentence.
- Reason: Give one strong reason why.
- Example: Support it with a specific fact, case, or precedent.
- Point: Restate your position (with a slight variation or call to action).
Example — Surprise mod caucus on 'sanctions effectiveness':
'The delegation of Russia maintains that broad economic sanctions are counterproductive. Sanctions regimes consistently harm civilian populations while entrenching the very governments they target. The UN's own 2019 report on DPRK sanctions found that humanitarian exemptions were failing — medical supply imports dropped 89% despite being technically permitted. This committee must move toward targeted, smart sanctions that isolate leaders without punishing populations.'
That's a complete 25-second speech built in 15 seconds of thinking.
