Propaganda Techniques Taxonomy

A systematic classification of propaganda techniques from name-calling and glittering generalities to more subtle methods of manipulation.

Why Classify Propaganda Techniques?

In 1937, the Institute for Propaganda Analysis identified seven core techniques: name-calling, glittering generalities, transfer, testimonial, plain folks, card stacking, and bandwagon. Nearly a century later, these categories remain remarkably useful — but the landscape has expanded. Modern propaganda researchers have identified dozens of additional techniques, from emotional appeals and logical fallacies to more sophisticated methods like strategic ambiguity and controlled opposition.

Understanding this taxonomy is not academic exercise. When you can name the technique being used on you, its power diminishes. Propaganda works best on people who do not recognize it as propaganda. The moment you can say 'that is a bandwagon appeal' or 'that is card stacking,' you have broken the spell.
