The Prime Minister and Cabinet
How the PM is selected, the powers of the office, the role of Cabinet, and the relationship between executive and legislature.
Becoming Prime Minister
The Prime Minister is not directly elected to the role. By convention, the monarch invites the person who can command a majority in the House of Commons to form a government — almost always the leader of the largest party after a general election. There is no formal constitutional document defining the PM's powers; the office exists largely by convention.
A PM can be replaced mid-term if their party changes leader, as happened with Boris Johnson's replacement by Liz Truss and then Rishi Sunak in 2022. This means a PM's authority ultimately depends on retaining the confidence of their parliamentary party.
