Press Freedom Around the World
Understanding the RSF World Press Freedom Index, jailed journalists, and why press freedom is the foundation of informed citizenship.
Why Press Freedom Matters to You
Even if you live in a country with strong press protections, press freedom worldwide directly affects the quality of information you receive. When journalists are jailed in Turkey, you get less reliable reporting from Turkey. When China blocks foreign correspondents, you get less insight into the world's second-largest economy. Press freedom isn't an abstract principle — it's the infrastructure of your information supply.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) publishes an annual World Press Freedom Index that ranks 180 countries based on pluralism, media independence, legislative framework, transparency, and safety of journalists. In 2024, the Nordic countries (Norway, Denmark, Sweden) topped the index, while North Korea, Eritrea, and Iran ranked at the bottom.
The index reveals patterns that matter for critical news readers. Countries with lower press freedom scores produce less reliable domestic media, which means international correspondents become more important — but those correspondents face restrictions too. The result is information deserts: regions where reliable reporting is scarce or absent.
