Managing Press Conferences
Plan and execute press conferences that deliver your message while handling unexpected questions.
Planning a Press Conference
Press conferences are high-stakes events where you control the stage but not the questions. Thorough preparation is the difference between a story that advances your message and one that creates a crisis.
When to hold one: Only when you have genuinely significant news that warrants real-time interaction with multiple journalists simultaneously. If a press release or individual briefings would suffice, skip the conference.
Preparation: Draft an opening statement (2-3 minutes maximum). Anticipate the 10 toughest questions journalists might ask and prepare answers. Identify your 3 key messages and practice bridging back to them regardless of what is asked.
Logistics: Timing matters — avoid competing with other major news events. Provide press kits (digital and physical) with your statement, key data, and high-resolution images. Have a moderator to manage the flow of questions.
