Overcoming Speaking Anxiety

Practical techniques for managing nerves before and during MUN speeches, from first-timers to experienced delegates.

Why MUN Speaking Feels Different

MUN speaking anxiety isn't ordinary stage fright. You're not just presenting — you're improvising, defending positions under attack, and performing in a format with unfamiliar rules. A 2019 survey of NMUN delegates found that 72% rated 'speaking in committee' as their top anxiety, above research or writing.

The good news: MUN anxiety is highly treatable because it's situational, not dispositional. You're not afraid of speaking — you're afraid of speaking in this context. That means exposure and preparation fix it.

The Three Sources of MUN Anxiety

  1. Content anxiety — 'I don't know enough.' This is solved by research (the single best confidence builder).
  2. Performance anxiety — 'I'll stumble or freeze.' This is solved by practice and physical techniques.
  3. Social anxiety — 'People will judge me.' This is solved by reframing: every delegate is too worried about their own speech to judge yours.
