Organizing Evidence

How to build and maintain an evidence file — from folder structure to tagging systems that let you find cards fast.

Building Your Evidence File

A well-organized evidence file is the difference between finding the perfect card in 10 seconds and desperately searching during prep time.

Folder Structure

Topic - Jan 2025/ Pro/ Contention 1 - Economic Growth/ Contention 2 - National Security/ Frontlines/ (responses to expected Neg arguments) Con/ Contention 1 - Environmental Harm/ Contention 2 - Inequality/ Frontlines/ General/ Definitions/ Background/ Impact Evidence/

Naming Conventions

Name files by what they prove: china-economy-growing-2024.docx not research-3.docx.

Frontlines

For every argument you run, prepare 'frontlines' — pre-written responses to attacks you expect. Organize these as: 'If they say X, we say Y [with evidence Z].'

Digital Tools

  • Verbatim: The standard debate template for Microsoft Word (used in Policy/LD)
  • Google Docs: Good for team collaboration
  • Notion/Obsidian: For debaters who want tagging and search
