Negotiation Simulation

Role-play a complex negotiation with AI — apply everything you've learned.

This lesson brings together everything you've learned. You'll prepare for and execute a negotiation using all the concepts from this course.

The Scenario

You represent Country A at a bilateral negotiation over a shared river that forms the border between Country A and Country B.

The situation:

  • Country A (upstream) wants to build a dam for hydroelectric power and irrigation
  • Country B (downstream) depends on the river for agriculture, fishing, and drinking water
  • Country B fears the dam will reduce water flow and harm their economy
  • Both countries are members of a regional economic bloc and have other trade interests
  • An international mediator has set a two-day timeline

Your Preparation Checklist

Before any negotiation, work through these:

  1. Interests — What does Country A actually need? (Energy, water, economic growth, regional leadership)
  2. Their interests — What does Country B actually need? (Water security, agricultural output, fairness, respect)
  3. BATNA — What happens if there's no deal? (Country A builds anyway and faces sanctions? Country B appeals to international courts?)
  4. ZOPA — Where might agreement be possible? (Guaranteed minimum water flow? Revenue sharing? Joint management?)
  5. Anchoring — What's your opening position and how will you justify it?
  6. Hardball prep — What if Country B threatens to involve a powerful ally?
