Neglected Tropical Diseases
The diseases that affect over a billion people but receive a fraction of global health funding — and efforts to address this inequity.
The Neglected Billion
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of 20 conditions identified by the WHO that affect more than 1.7 billion people — predominantly in the world's poorest communities. They include diseases like schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis, trachoma, Chagas disease, and leishmaniasis.
NTDs are called 'neglected' because they disproportionately affect populations with little political power or market value to pharmaceutical companies. Despite their enormous burden — causing disability, disfigurement, and social stigma — NTDs receive less than 1% of global health R&D funding. Many NTDs have treatments that cost pennies per dose but lack the distribution infrastructure to reach those in need.
