Working in Multicultural Teams
How cultural differences affect team dynamics — communication, decision-making, conflict, and how to build an inclusive team culture.
Cultural Friction in Teams
Multicultural teams have enormous potential — diverse perspectives lead to more creative solutions and better decisions. But they also face unique challenges:
Communication mismatch: Direct communicators (Dutch, German, American) may seem blunt or rude to indirect communicators (Japanese, Korean, Thai). Indirect communicators may seem evasive or unclear to direct ones.
Decision-making conflict: Some team members expect the leader to decide (high power distance). Others expect democratic consensus (low power distance). Neither approach is wrong, but the mismatch creates frustration.
Feedback styles: In some cultures, giving critical feedback publicly is normal and expected. In others, it causes severe loss of face and damages relationships permanently.
Time orientation: Some cultures treat deadlines as firm commitments. Others treat them as rough guidelines. This difference alone can destroy trust if not addressed explicitly.
