Moderated Caucus Speaking

How to make the most of 60 to 90 seconds — the art of concise, impactful speaking in moderated caucus format.

The Unique Challenge of the Moderated Caucus

The moderated caucus is where MUN conferences are won. Unlike formal debate where delegates deliver prepared speeches in order, the moderated caucus creates a focused, rapid-fire exchange on a specific topic. Speaking times are short — typically 60 to 90 seconds — and the chair selects speakers from a show of placards.

This format rewards a completely different skill set than formal debate. You cannot build elaborate arguments. You cannot rely on prepared text. You must make one clear point, support it with one piece of evidence, and connect it to the caucus topic — all before the chair's gavel cuts you off.

The delegates who dominate moderated caucuses share three traits: they listen actively to what others say and respond to it (rather than delivering pre-written remarks), they are comfortable speaking without a full script, and they know how to make a single point land with force. A moderated caucus is a conversation, not a series of monologues.
