Understanding the Media Landscape

Map the modern media ecosystem — from legacy outlets to social media — and understand what journalists need from you.

The Modern Media Ecosystem

The media landscape has fragmented dramatically. Understanding who covers what — and how — is essential for effective press relations.

Legacy media (newspapers, broadcast TV, wire services like AP and Reuters) still set the agenda. A story in the New York Times or on BBC shapes what everyone else covers. These outlets have shrinking newsrooms but remain the most credible sources for decision-makers.

Digital-native outlets (Politico, Axios, The Information) often break stories faster and reach influential niche audiences. Their journalists are frequently former legacy reporters who maintain deep source networks.

Social media is where stories spread, not usually where they originate. A tweet from a journalist can amplify a story faster than the original article. Understanding each platform's dynamics — LinkedIn for policy, X/Twitter for breaking news, TikTok for public opinion — is part of modern press strategy.

Podcasts and newsletters have created a new class of influential individual journalists whose audiences may be small but highly engaged and disproportionately influential.
