Media Development Aid
How international organizations and donor governments fund journalism and media capacity in developing countries, and the tensions this creates.
Funding Independent Journalism Globally
International media development aid — funding from governments, foundations, and NGOs to support journalism in developing countries — has become a significant force in global media. Organizations like Internews, the International Center for Journalists, and the Thomson Reuters Foundation provide training, equipment, and financial support to independent media outlets worldwide. Donor governments including Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, and the US (through USAID) fund media development as part of democracy promotion.
This aid has produced genuine results. Many of the independent news outlets operating in authoritarian and semi-authoritarian countries rely on international funding to survive. Training programs have built journalistic capacity in post-conflict societies. Legal support has helped journalists challenge censorship laws.
