Managing Unmoderated Caucuses
How to supervise unmoderated caucuses effectively — monitoring progress, preventing wasted time, and knowing when to bring delegates back.
Your Role During Unmods
During an unmoderated caucus, delegates leave their seats to negotiate freely. The chair's formal authority pauses, but your work doesn't stop. This is your chance to observe the committee dynamics, identify emerging blocs, and talk informally with delegates who seem lost or disengaged.
What to watch for:
- Which delegates are leading working groups? These are your strongest performers.
- Who is standing alone or on the margins? Walk over and help them find a group.
- Are any groups clearly stuck? You can ask questions (without providing answers) to help them move forward.
- Is the energy dying? That's your cue to bring the committee back to formal session sooner than planned.
