The Lincoln-Douglas Format
Understanding the structure and time limits of LD debate — from the AC to the final rebuttal.
The Structure of Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Lincoln-Douglas (LD) is a one-on-one debate format centered on questions of value and morality. Unlike Policy debate's focus on plans and evidence volume, LD asks which values should guide our decisions.
The standard NFL/NSDA format:
| Speech | Speaker | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative Constructive (AC) | Aff | 6 min |
| Cross-Examination | Neg asks | 3 min |
| Negative Constructive (NC) | Neg | 7 min |
| Cross-Examination | Aff asks | 3 min |
| 1st Affirmative Rebuttal (1AR) | Aff | 4 min |
| Negative Rebuttal (NR) | Neg | 6 min |
| 2nd Affirmative Rebuttal (2AR) | Aff | 3 min |
Each side also gets 4 minutes of prep time total.
Notice the asymmetry: the Negative gets more total speaking time (13 min vs 13 min), but the Affirmative speaks first and last. The Aff's burden is to set the terms of debate; the Neg's advantage is the larger NC block to both respond and present their own case.
