International Campaign Differences
How campaigns differ across democracies: shorter timelines in the UK, party-centered systems in Europe, and the unique excesses of American elections.
American Exceptionalism in Campaigning
American campaigns are globally exceptional in their length, cost, and candidate-centeredness. A US presidential campaign effectively runs for two years. The 2020 cycle cost $14 billion. Candidates build personal campaign organizations independent of their parties. No other democracy campaigns this way.
British general elections, by contrast, are called with roughly six weeks' notice. Total spending in the 2019 UK general election was approximately 56 million pounds, roughly 0.5% of US spending. Campaigns are party-centered: voters choose between parties more than individual candidates. Free airtime is provided to parties by the BBC and other broadcasters. There are strict spending limits for both local candidates and national parties. The result is a dramatically different campaign experience.
