Influence Mapping Techniques
Practical methods for identifying who actually influences decisions, beyond formal titles and org charts.
The Influence Gap
Every organization has two structures: the formal hierarchy shown on org charts, and the informal influence network that actually determines how decisions get made. Influence mapping closes the gap between these two realities. A junior aide who briefs the president every morning may shape policy more than a cabinet secretary who gets a monthly meeting. A retired general with no official role may determine military procurement through personal relationships.
The challenge is that informal influence is deliberately invisible. People who hold it rarely advertise it, and those who lack it often pretend they have it. Effective influence mapping requires systematic techniques to cut through the performance of power and find the substance.
