Indian Elections

How the world's largest elections are conducted, the role of the Election Commission, and the dynamics of Indian voting.

The Scale of Indian Elections

Indian general elections are the largest democratic exercise on Earth. The 2024 election involved approximately 970 million eligible voters, over 1 million polling stations, and phased voting over six weeks across the country. Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are used nationwide, making counting faster but generating periodic controversies about their security.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is an independent constitutional body that administers all elections. It enforces the Model Code of Conduct during campaigns, which restricts government spending announcements and inflammatory speech. The ECI can postpone elections, disqualify candidates, and even countermand results in cases of booth capture or violence.
