Media Freedom

How India's vast and vibrant media landscape coexists with growing threats to press freedom, the political economy of Indian media, and what this means for democratic accountability.

The Largest Media Landscape in the World

India has over 100,000 registered newspapers and magazines, more than 900 television channels, and hundreds of millions of social media users. It is the world's largest media market by sheer volume. The country's linguistic diversity means media operates in dozens of languages, with Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and Marathi each supporting major independent media ecosystems.

This diversity is both a strength and a vulnerability. India's media landscape is so fragmented that no single outlet dominates public discourse, making centralized censorship difficult. At the same time, the economic model of Indian media, heavily dependent on government advertising, creates financial incentives for supportive coverage. Government advertising is the single largest source of revenue for many smaller newspapers and television channels, giving the ruling party significant soft power over editorial decisions.
