Human Rights Education

Why teaching people about their rights is itself a human right, and how education programs prevent abuses.

The Right to Know Your Rights

Human rights education (HRE) is both a human right in itself and a means of protecting all other rights. Article 26 of the UDHR states that education shall be directed to 'the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.' The UN Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training (2011) defines HRE as education about human rights (knowledge of standards and mechanisms), through human rights (using participatory and rights-respecting methods), and for human rights (empowering people to claim their rights).

The logic is straightforward: people cannot exercise rights they do not know they have. When garment workers in Bangladesh do not know about labor standards, they cannot demand compliance. When women in rural India do not know about legal protections against domestic violence, they cannot seek help. When citizens do not understand the limits of police power, they cannot challenge abuses. Human rights education transforms passive victims into active rights-holders.
