Health and Development
The relationship between health and economic development — from the Millennium Development Goals to Universal Health Coverage.
Health Drives Development
The relationship between health and economic development runs in both directions. Healthier populations are more productive, better educated, and more economically active. The Commission on Macroeconomics and Health (2001) estimated that every dollar invested in health in low-income countries generates a six-fold return in economic growth.
Health featured prominently in the Millennium Development Goals (2000-2015): three of eight goals were directly health-related (child mortality, maternal health, and combating HIV/AIDS and malaria). The Sustainable Development Goals (2015-2030) consolidated these into SDG 3: 'Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages,' with a central target of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
