Handling Difficult Situations

What to do when things go wrong — disruptive delegates, procedural challenges, offensive speeches, and emotional conflicts.

Difficult Delegate Scenarios

Every chair eventually faces challenging situations. Here are the most common:

The dominator: One delegate tries to control every debate, interrupts others, and monopolizes speaking time. Solution: Limit their speaking turns by prioritizing delegates who haven't spoken. Enforce time limits strictly.

The disengaged: A delegate is on their phone, passing notes to friends, or clearly checked out. Solution: Approach them during an unmod privately. Ask if they need help finding a working group or understanding the topic.

The rule-lawyer: A delegate constantly raises points of order to challenge your rulings. Solution: Rule firmly and move on. If their point has merit, acknowledge it. If not, say 'The chair's ruling stands' and continue. Don't get drawn into extended procedural arguments.

The offensive speaker: A delegate makes a statement that is culturally insensitive or personally insulting. Solution: Interrupt immediately. Say 'The delegate will refrain from making personal remarks' and move to the next speaker. If it's severe, call a suspension and address it privately.
