The Future of Criminal Justice
Emerging trends in criminal justice, from AI in policing to global reform movements.
Technology and Criminal Justice
Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in criminal justice: predictive policing algorithms identify areas likely to experience crime, risk assessment tools inform bail and sentencing decisions, and facial recognition technology aids identification. These tools promise efficiency and objectivity but raise serious concerns about bias, privacy, and accountability.
Predictive policing algorithms trained on historical data may reproduce and amplify existing biases: if police have historically over-policed minority neighborhoods, the algorithm will direct more policing to those same areas. Risk assessment tools have been shown to produce racially biased results. Facial recognition technology is less accurate for darker skin tones, raising the risk of misidentification.
