Framework and Standards

How to set up the evaluative lens for the debate — the framework that tells the judge what matters most.

What Is a Framework?

A framework (also called a criterion, value criterion, or standard) tells the judge what matters most in the debate. It is the evaluative lens through which all arguments should be weighed.

Common frameworks include:

  • Utilitarianism — the side that produces the greatest good for the greatest number should win
  • Human rights — the side that better protects fundamental rights should win
  • Justice — the side that produces the most just outcome should win
  • National security — the side that better protects national security should win
  • Cost-benefit analysis — the side whose policy has benefits outweighing costs should win

Your framework should favor your arguments. If your strongest contention is about saving lives, a utilitarian framework works. If your strongest contention is about individual liberty, a rights-based framework works. Choose the framework that makes your case look best.
