Flowing LD Rounds
How to track arguments across all speeches using a flow sheet — the essential skill for organized debate.
What Is Flowing?
Flowing is debate shorthand for note-taking. You create a grid where each column is a speech and each row tracks a single argument across the round.
Setting Up Your Flow
Use a legal pad in landscape orientation. Create columns for:
AC | CX1 | NC | CX2 | 1AR | NR | 2AR
As the AC is read, jot down the value, criterion, and each contention claim on the left. When the NC responds to Contention 1, write the response in the NC column on the same row. When the 1AR answers that response, write it in the 1AR column on the same row.
Flowing Tips
- Use abbreviations: V = value, C = criterion, C1/C2 = contentions, T = turn, D = dropped
- Use arrows to show argument extensions
- Circle dropped arguments — they're your easiest wins
- Flow your own speeches too, so you know what you've committed to
- Keep a separate sheet for the Neg case
