First-Past-the-Post

The simplest and most widely used electoral system, where the candidate with the most votes wins the seat, no majority required.

The Winner Takes All

First-past-the-post (FPTP) is the simplest electoral system: voters cast one vote for one candidate, and the candidate with the most votes wins the seat. No majority is required. A candidate can win with 30 percent of the vote if no other candidate gets more. The system is used in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, India, and many former British colonies.

FPTP's simplicity is its greatest strength. Voters understand it immediately, counting is straightforward, and results are usually known quickly. Each district has a clear representative, creating a direct link between constituents and their elected official. Supporters argue this accountability is essential for responsive democracy.
