Industrial Revolution & rise of nation-states
How industrialization (c.1760-1914) restructured economies and societies and fused with nationalism to forge the modern nation-state, including Germany and Italy.
The First and Second Industrial Revolutions
The Industrial Revolution names the transition, beginning in Britain around 1760, from agrarian handicraft economies to machine-based factory production. Its preconditions were specific and datable: the enclosure movement that freed agricultural labour, abundant coal and iron, Atlantic trade capital, and a patent regime under the Statute of Monopolies (1624) that rewarded invention. James Watt's separate-condenser steam engine (patented 1769, improved 1781) converted heat into rotary motion and untethered factories from riverbanks. Richard Arkwright's water frame (1769) and the factory system at Cromford mechanised cotton spinning; Edmund Cartwright's power loom (1785) did the same for weaving. George Stephenson's Rocket (1829) and the Liverpool & Manchester Railway (1830) inaugurated the railway age.
From Steam to Steel, Chemicals and Electricity
The so-called Second Industrial Revolution (c.1870-1914) shifted the leading sectors to steel, chemicals, and electricity, and the centre of gravity to Germany and the United States. Henry Bessemer's converter (patented 1856) made cheap bulk steel; Werner von Siemens and the dynamo, plus Thomas Edison's Pearl Street Station (1882) and the electric grid, industrialised power itself. The internal-combustion engine (Nikolaus Otto, 1876) and Karl Benz's motorcar (1886) reorganised mobility. This phase rewarded scientific research, large corporations, and cartels, displacing Britain's early lead.
Social Consequences and Doctrines
Industrialisation produced an urban proletariat, the factory town, and new class tensions. Britain answered with the Factory Act of 1833 (limiting child labour and creating inspectors), the Mines Act 1842, and the Ten Hours Act 1847. Friedrich Engels documented Manchester slums in The Condition of the Working Class in England (1845); Marx and Engels issued The Communist Manifesto (1848) in the year European revolutions swept Paris, Vienna, Berlin and Budapest. The doctrine of laissez-faire, codified intellectually in Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations (1776), contended with the rise of trade unionism, legalised in Britain after the repeal of the Combination Acts (1824-25) and the Trade Union Act 1871. Demographic transition, mass literacy and railways simultaneously created the dense, connected populations on which modern nationalism would feed. The Revolution thus supplied not only the material base of the nineteenth century but the social fault lines—capital versus labour, city versus country—that structured its politics.
