Evidence Practice
Hands-on exercises to practice finding, cutting, and using evidence in realistic debate scenarios.
Building Evidence Skills Through Practice
Evidence research is a skill that improves with deliberate practice. Here are the best drills:
The 30-Minute Research Sprint
Set a timer for 30 minutes. Given a specific claim (e.g., 'Universal basic income reduces poverty'), find and cut 3 cards — one from a government/academic source, one from a think tank, and one from quality journalism. Focus on speed without sacrificing quality.
The Evidence Audit
Take your existing file and review every card. Ask:
- Is the tag accurate? Does the evidence actually say this?
- Is the source still current?
- Would this survive an evidence challenge? Delete cards that don't pass. Replace them with better ones.
The Rapid Response Drill
Have a teammate read an argument. You have 5 minutes to find responsive evidence. This simulates the pressure of in-round research (legal in PF and LD at some tournaments).
The Cross-Apply Exercise
Take one piece of strong evidence and brainstorm 3 different arguments it could support. The best evidence is versatile — a card about economic inequality might apply to healthcare, education, and criminal justice topics.
