Epistemology Toolkit: Quick Reference
A compact reference covering all major epistemological concepts, frameworks, and practical tools from the course.
Core Concepts at a Glance
Knowledge: Justified true belief (plus proper connection between justification and truth). Four sources: perception, testimony, reason, memory.
Truth theories: Correspondence (matches reality), coherence (fits within a consistent system), pragmatic (leads to successful action).
Science: Falsifiability (Popper) — claims must be testable. Paradigm shifts (Kuhn) — science alternates between normal periods and revolutionary changes.
Social epistemology: Knowledge is produced by institutions. Institutional quality determines knowledge quality. Epistemic justice requires fair treatment of all testifiers.
Certainty: Different contexts require different certainty standards. Calibrate confidence to evidence strength. Absolute certainty is rarely achievable or necessary.
