Early Activism: The Young Mandela

How a rural Xhosa boy became one of Africa's most determined freedom fighters — Mandela's journey from law student to ANC leader.

From Transkei to Johannesburg

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in 1918 in the rural Transkei region. His father was a chief of the Thembu people. After his father's death, Mandela was raised by the regent of the Thembu, exposing him to traditional leadership and consensus-based decision-making that would later influence his political style.

Mandela studied law at the University of Fort Hare — one of the few institutions open to Black students — before moving to Johannesburg in 1941. There, he experienced urban apartheid firsthand: the crowded townships, the pass laws, the daily humiliations. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944 and helped found the ANC Youth League, which pushed the older generation toward more assertive resistance.
