Deng's Legacy: Architect of Modern China
Assessing Deng Xiaoping's complex legacy — economic transformation, political repression, and the system he built that Xi Jinping has since reshaped.
The Transformation
The scale of what Deng set in motion is staggering. When he took power in 1978, China's GDP per capita was lower than many sub-Saharan African nations. By his death in 1997, China was the world's fastest-growing major economy. In the decades since, over 800 million Chinese have been lifted out of extreme poverty — the largest poverty reduction in human history.
Deng also established institutional norms that constrained his successors: collective leadership, term limits, mandatory retirement ages, and orderly succession. These norms were designed to prevent another Mao — a single leader with unchecked power making catastrophic decisions.
