Decolonization and UN Expansion

How the wave of independence movements transformed the UN from a club of 51 to a near-universal organization of 193 members.

The Wave of Independence

When the UN was founded in 1945, most of Africa and much of Asia were under colonial rule. The original 51 member states were overwhelmingly European, American, or aligned with Western powers. By 1970, UN membership had more than doubled to 127, driven almost entirely by decolonization.

The 1960 Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples (General Assembly Resolution 1514) was a turning point. It declared that 'all peoples have the right to self-determination' and that colonialism must be brought to a 'speedy and unconditional end.' A Special Committee on Decolonization was established to monitor progress.
