Debiasing Strategies

Practical techniques for reducing the influence of cognitive biases in your decisions.

Can You Actually Debias Yourself?

Research on debiasing is humbling. Simply knowing about cognitive biases does not eliminate them — even Kahneman himself admitted that awareness of biases did not make him immune. However, structured techniques can significantly reduce their influence:

Consider the opposite. Before making a decision, deliberately generate reasons why your initial judgment might be wrong. This directly combats confirmation bias and has strong experimental support.

Use base rates. When estimating probability, start with the statistical base rate before adjusting for specific circumstances. This counters the availability heuristic and representativeness bias.

Pre-commit to criteria. Before evaluating options, define what a good outcome looks like. This prevents post-hoc rationalization and anchoring.

Conduct a pre-mortem. Before launching a project, imagine it has failed and work backward to identify what went wrong. This technique, developed by Gary Klein, has been shown to increase the ability to identify risks by 30%.

Slow down. Many biases are System 1 errors. Simply introducing a delay between impulse and decision gives System 2 time to engage.
