Debate Preparation
Inside the intensive process of preparing a candidate for high-stakes debates: mock sessions, strategy, and the expectations game.
The Multi-Week Process
Debate preparation for a presidential candidate typically spans three to four weeks. The process begins with a briefing book covering the opponent's likely attacks, the candidate's vulnerabilities, and key policy positions distilled into 60-second answers. The team identifies 3-5 themes the candidate should return to regardless of the question asked.
Mock debates are the centerpiece. A trusted advisor plays the opponent, studying their mannerisms, speech patterns, and likely arguments. The mock stage replicates the actual debate venue: same podium height, same time limits, same camera angles. Sessions are recorded and reviewed. The candidate practices pivoting from hostile questions to favorable themes, delivering prepared lines naturally, and managing body language under pressure.
