Crossfire Strategy
How to use PF's unique crossfire periods — from targeted questions to grand crossfire tactics.
Three Types of Crossfire
PF has three crossfire periods, each with different dynamics:
First Crossfire (after constructives)
Between the two first speakers. Goals:
- Clarify opponent's arguments for your partner's rebuttal
- Get concessions that weaken their case
- Expose unsupported claims ('What's your evidence for that?')
Second Crossfire (after rebuttals)
Between the two second speakers. Goals:
- Challenge their rebuttal responses
- Set up your summary speech
- Press on arguments they're losing
Grand Crossfire (after summaries)
All four debaters. This is chaotic by nature. Goals:
- Control the narrative heading into final focus
- Don't let your opponents dominate — assert your key voters
- Coordinate with your partner: one person asks, one takes notes
Universal Rules
- The first question goes to the team that just spoke second
- After that, it's open dialogue (not strict alternation)
- Keep answers short — crossfire is about questions, not speeches
