Courtroom Roles

The key roles in a mock trial team — attorneys, witnesses, timekeepers, and how each contributes to winning.

Mock Trial Team Roles

A typical mock trial team has 6-8 active members per trial side:

Attorneys (3 per side)

  • Opening Attorney: Delivers the opening statement — a roadmap of your case theory
  • Examining Attorneys (2-3): Conduct direct examination of your witnesses and cross-examination of opposing witnesses
  • Closing Attorney: Delivers the closing argument — the final persuasive pitch

Each attorney must master the rules of evidence: when to object, how to lay foundation, and how to introduce exhibits.

Witnesses (3 per side)

  • Portray characters from the case based on their sworn affidavits
  • Must know their statements thoroughly — opposing attorneys will try to trip them up
  • Need strong acting skills: stay in character, show appropriate emotion, and remain credible
  • Can only testify to facts in their affidavit (no making things up)

Other Roles

  • Timekeeper: Tracks speech times (essential at many tournaments)
  • Bailiff: Swears in witnesses (at some tournaments)
  • Understudies: Can fill any role — crucial for team depth
