Corporate Lobbying

How corporations shape government policy through direct lobbying, trade associations, and the revolving door, and why corporate advocacy is so difficult for the public to counter.

The Scale of Corporate Lobbying

In the United States, corporations and business associations consistently account for over 80% of total lobbying spending. In 2023, the pharmaceutical industry spent over $370 million on lobbying, more than any other sector. Technology companies collectively spent over $70 million. The US Chamber of Commerce, the largest single lobbying spender, spent over $80 million.

These figures represent only direct lobbying expenditures reported under the Lobbying Disclosure Act. They do not include spending on public relations campaigns, think tank funding, academic research sponsorship, grassroots mobilization, or campaign contributions, all of which serve advocacy objectives without being classified as lobbying. The true cost of corporate influence is far higher than official lobbying disclosures suggest.
