The Continental Shelf
Seabed rights beyond the EEZ and the race to claim the ocean floor.
Beyond the EEZ: The Continental Shelf
Under UNCLOS, a coastal state has sovereign rights over the natural resources of its continental shelf — the seabed and subsoil extending from the coast. This automatically extends to 200 nm, but states can claim an extended continental shelf up to 350 nm (or 100 nm beyond the 2,500-meter isobath) if they can demonstrate that the natural prolongation of their landmass extends that far.
The Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) reviews these claims. Over 80 states have submitted claims or preliminary information to the CLCS. These claims are driven by the potential for oil, gas, and mineral deposits on the deep seabed — resources worth trillions of dollars.
