Common LD Topic Areas

LD resolutions cycle through predictable philosophical and policy domains — learn the recurring topic areas and how to prepare for each.

The Recurring Landscape of LD Topics

While every LD resolution is unique, they draw from a surprisingly small set of recurring philosophical tensions. Recognizing these patterns lets you build a library of arguments that transfer across topics — a debater who has thought deeply about the tension between liberty and security will be prepared for dozens of different resolutions.

The NSDA (National Speech and Debate Association) selects new LD topics every two months for the September-October, November-December, January-February, and March-April periods, plus a national tournament topic. Over the past two decades, certain clusters of topics appear again and again: individual rights vs. collective welfare, government authority vs. civil liberties, justice vs. mercy, national sovereignty vs. international obligations, and the proper scope of state power.

Each topic area has its own body of philosophical literature, set of key thinkers, and strategic considerations. Debaters who specialize deeply in one area have an advantage when that area comes up, but debaters who understand all the major areas can adapt to any topic more quickly.
