Common CX Mistakes

The most frequent errors debaters make in cross-examination and how to avoid them.

Mistakes to Avoid

Asking questions with no purpose — every question should serve clarification, concession extraction, or setup. Random questions waste time.

Arguing instead of asking — CX is for questions, not mini-speeches. If you find yourself making statements instead of asking questions, you are doing it wrong.

Not listening to answers — some debaters are so focused on their prepared questions that they miss unexpected concessions or openings.

Asking open-ended questions when you want a specific answer — 'Can you explain your solvency?' lets your opponent give a five-sentence answer that wastes your time. 'Does your solvency evidence postdate 2023?' gets a usable answer.

Being unnecessarily aggressive — judges dislike bullying. Firm but respectful questioning is far more effective than shouting or talking over answers.

Conceding too much when answering — saying 'I guess so' or 'probably' to avoid confrontation hands your opponent ammunition.
