Commercial Media Systems
How advertising-driven and subscription media operate, the incentives they create, and why commercial pressures shape news content.
News as a Business
In commercial media systems, news organizations are businesses that must generate revenue to survive. The two primary models are advertising-driven (free to the audience, funded by advertisers) and subscription-driven (funded directly by readers or viewers). Each creates distinct incentives that shape the news.
Advertising-driven media must attract the largest possible audience because revenue depends on eyeballs. This creates pressure toward sensationalism, conflict, and celebrity content — whatever drives clicks and views. Subscription media must attract an audience willing to pay, which tends to reward depth and quality but creates an information divide where premium journalism becomes a luxury good accessible mainly to higher-income audiences.
