Cold War Ally: Thatcher and Reagan
Thatcher's role in the final decade of the Cold War — her relationship with Reagan, her early recognition of Gorbachev, and the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The Special Relationship
Thatcher and Ronald Reagan formed one of the most consequential partnerships in modern diplomacy. They shared a worldview: free markets, strong defense, and deep skepticism of the Soviet Union. Thatcher had been dubbed the 'Iron Lady' by the Soviet press in 1976 — a nickname she embraced.
Together, they pursued a strategy of military buildup and ideological pressure against the Soviet bloc. Thatcher supported the deployment of American cruise missiles at Greenham Common despite massive public protests. She backed Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative even when other allies were skeptical. Yet the relationship was not without friction: Thatcher was furious when the US invaded Grenada — a Commonwealth country — without consulting her in 1983.
