Coalition Dynamics

When negotiations involve three or more parties, coalitions form and shift. Learn how to build, join, and counter coalitions.

Why Coalitions Matter

Most negotiation training focuses on two-party scenarios, but real-world negotiations — from UN resolutions to corporate board votes to trade agreements — typically involve three or more parties. When multiple parties are involved, the dynamics change fundamentally: parties can form coalitions to increase their collective bargaining power.

A coalition is an alliance of two or more parties who coordinate their positions to achieve outcomes they could not achieve alone. Coalitions can be stable (parties share deep interests) or temporary (parties align on one issue but diverge on others). Understanding coalition dynamics is essential because even parties with individually weak positions can become powerful through alliances.
